Gay Rights Roundup

Photobucket

Hello, I'm back with another installment of 'Megan's Gay Rights Roundup'... Slightly different title as I felt it more fitting as I tend to give you a round up of the latest news... but of course now & then a rant or two is thrown in ;)

Civil Unions in Hawaii!!

"For me, this bill represents equal rights for everyone in Hawaii and everyone who comes here. This is for me the essence of the aloha spirit."
Firstly I have to, of course, start off with the fantastic news that civil unions have now passed in Hawaii as of 23rd February 2011. This has rightfully come after a lot of hard work from equality campaigners, especially when it was vetoed last year by Governor Lingle.

However this is the lovely Governor Abercrombie who signed the legislation. This is great news for so many gay couples in Hawaii, and for equality in general... not to mention a certain lesbian couple who plan to have a wonderful beach wedding in Hawaii one day ;) The bill does not come into effect until Jan 2012.

Amendments to Civil Partnerships UK

More good news took place in the UK with 'alli amendment' to Civil Partnerships, enabling them to be carried out in religious places. (Of course, the religious institution have to agree with this, they cannot be forced to).

The government are also in talks (well, hopefully some time soon) to extend marriage to same sex couples. Ben Summerskill (Stonewall) stated "If there’s a genuine commitment to making progress in this area, it is painfully slow."

LGBT History Month

"I would like to pay tribute to all those who give up their time to bring LGBT History Month together. Events like this enrich our society and challenge us to think more about the world around us." - David Cameron, 10th February, 2011

This month also marked LGBT History Month, which saw many different organisations, from the police to the sports world, focus on the histories of LGB people. The police stations in Wales even had the rainbow flag up for the month!

Born This Way

I'm sure that this cannot come as news to you that Lady Gaga's latest single is being hailed as a gay anthem, because you were born this way baby ;) There has been much criticism levelled at her, from exploiting gay people and the pink pound to ripping off Madonna. Personally, it didn't sound very 'Gaga' for me (I am a fan), but I am now hooked.
"No matter gay, straight or bi
lesbian, transgendered life
I'm on the right track, baby
I was born to survive"
Jessie J 'Comes Out'

Jessie J spoke out on twitter how she 'l.o.v.e's (see what I did there) boys AND girls. She stated the following:

"For all the people congratulating me on 'coming out' or confirming I'm 'bi' lol-I have NEVER hid my sexuality. The press just like to grasp anything and make it gossip or an exclusive *hype* I love who I love. I will never label my sexuality. If its a boy its a boy if its a girl its a girl. #simple #whoyouare #thereisaidit"
It's good to see a female celeb being honest from the start about their sexual orientation. We don't have many out.. well I can't think of any openly bi/gay British female popstars?! (Unless you count Lady Soverign...)

Speaking of Jessie J, my sister and I did an impromptu mime of her song & I have dedicated it to my gorgeous girlfriend <3

That's it from me until the next time,

What Megan & Whitney Did Next: Jan- Feb 2011

Photobucket

It's been 6 weeks since Wegan departed (feels way longer!), so here's a quick run through what Megan & Whitney did next...

What Megan Did Next

Photobucket

I won't lie, most of my time consists of going to work, and chillaxing in the evenings (which will involve talking to my beautiful gf on the phone or skype, but Jersey Shore is a recent obsession of mine!) As you may know I've been doing a part time masters for the past couple of years and now after passing all the modules I'm in the last stage and doing a dissertation (eek). So much of my time I feel guilty if I'm not doing anything work related. Though don't worry I've managed to have some fun times!

My Benny boy likes to sometimes keep me company next to the computer:

Photobucket

I went home to visit the family for a weekend and we went to this really nice Turkish restaurant. Can't wait to take Whitney there!

Photobucket

Photobucket

I had a night out with the girls.. which was great fun until I lost my beloved Blackberry Bold.. & have had to settle for Blackberry Curve :( WAH!

Photobucket

I got my hair did. Finally.. I've been growing it out for a year now.

Before

After
Photobucket

I had a fun night out with my gay bf Dean:

Photobucket

For Valentines, I obviously could not spend it with my love, and my friend Lee's boyfriend was away for work so he kindly took me out for dinner. Gayest straight date ever!

Photobucket

Photobucket

Whitney's Vday package arrived to me pretty quickly, I was SO excited opening it all & got lovely & thoughtful gifts (& 3 cards!) We're so bummed as two packages I've sent to her haven't arrived yet :(

Photobucket

My little (though bigger) sister came to visit me for the first time this weekend. We had some good fun, chilling with my friends with some wine at my flat on the Friday, andwe went to Hooters for the first time (not long been over here in the UK) on the Saturday.

Photobucket
That is our actual height difference. I am 23, & she is 17!

Photobucket

Photobucket

We also went to see 'Just go with it'. (Mainly so I could see Hawaii & squee). Whit also went to see it the next day.. must say we rather liked the actress in it ;) though DAYAM she's actually 23!!! Puts us to shame...

I have some crazy busy couple of weeks coming up, all of which will be revealed soon!

What Whitney Did Next

Photobucket

Wow, I cannot believe that 6 weeks have passed since I last departed my love! I know that 6 weeks may not sound like that long, but for me, just even a millisecond without my Megan seems like an ETERNITY! Now can you imagine how it feels?! ;P

Photobucket

I have been trying to keep myself busy and enjoy my last few months of Hawaii. I have lived on the beautiful island of O’ahu for 5 years now and am truly down to the last months…craaaaazy that half a decade has passed since I arrived as excited and eager as ever in 2006.

Photobucket

Anyhow, I returned back to Hawaii on January 16 and was determined to whip myself back into shape after I over indulged (as everyone does) over the holidays. I have consistently been going to the gym (Go me!) at least 3 days a week and eating healthier…ohh yeah! I have also got into yoga a bit and that has helped so much with my overall mind, body and soul. I hiked Koko Head mountain, which is this MAHOOOSIVE mountain that I once had to be rescued from. Like the saying goes, ‘when you fall off the mountain, you have to get right back up’ and soo I did! Needless to say, we did NOT have to call the fire and rescue squad again! So, this new year’s health kick is going quite well!

Photobucket

I have spent a great deal of my time at University as I am in my last semester, which means crunch time! It takes up 5 days of my weeks, so really haven’t had too much idol time, but when I do I have been spending my time wisely and trying to have a bit of fun!

Photobucket

Photobucket

I absolutely LOVE going to the beach to get my tan on and I enjoy spending it with my nearest and dearest. I have been frequenting Cockroach Cove quite a bit lately. I went to the BEAUTIFUL Ko’olina Resort for the day, as well!

Photobucket

Photobucket

After our beach day, us girls got all dressed up and glamorfied where headed out to First Friday in China town (down town scene once a month) to have a fun night out. We had an absolute blast!
Photobucket

Photobucket

I finally bought myself a nice bikini after living in Hawaii for 5 years, I thought it was about time. With that being said, I bought a San Lorenzo Brazilian style bikini, in which I LOVE!!! The shopping doesn’t stop there, I was in desperate need for some new summer threads so went on a mini shopping spree to accommodate the Hawaii weather!

Photobucket

Photobucket

Valentines Day came so quick and was of course very sad to not be spending it with my girl as we have yet to be together on February 14. However, this was our very last Vday apart…forever!

Photobucket

I did have a wonderful Valentine’s though despite missing my lady love. A good friend of mine took me to see Babyface in concert and treated me to an AMAZING dinner at the Kahala Hotel and Resort. Was so sweet of him and was also great to catch up with an old friend!

Photobucket

Photobucket

Time is truly flying by and I can honestly say that I am enjoying this ride so much and I know that when I reach my final destination that it is going to be subliminal! <3> 12.00

My baby girl will be here soon (date is unspecified) but in the near future! I absolutely cannot wait to get into our little Wegan routine. Eeeeeeeeeeeeee!

Photobucket

That is my update in a nutshell ya’ll! Will continue to keep you posted!

Love,

W x

Love Stories: Maria & Matt

Photobucket

The third installment of love stories is here. We bring you a beautiful love story that ends in a stunning wedding (in Hawaii!) and a fantastic future to look forward to. It is told from the perspective of Maria and we look forward to meeting up with them when we visit Whitney's home town later this year.

Maria & Matt

Photobucket

Matt and I met in a fiction writing class in the fall of 2006. We sat next to each other and we had one of those instant attractions. Problem was, I had a boyfriend. As the class progressed, I was impressed by Matt's writing, as it was a thinly veiled account of his life and family. I liked the stories he wrote that were obviously about himself, because his voice was so strong and genuine. He looked dangerous and wore all black Chucks. He seemed like he was on my level in many ways, physically and mentally. After meeting me, he went home and told his roommate that he was going to marry me. I knew he was too tempting to be around while I had a boyfriend so I began avoiding him.

Photobucket

Flash foward to 2008. Matt invited me to a party at his house via Facebook. I knew it was a mass invite and didn't think much of it. I wasn't planning on attending, since I didn't have a car at the time, but somehow as fate would have it, I ended up at his house anyway. He seemed happy to see me but I was not really looking for a relationship at the time and so we both played it cool for a few weeks until I got back from visiting my hometown and Matt finally contacted me in late July to see if I wanted to meet up. We hung out for the first time on July 25th 2008 and we have spent very little time apart since. It became clear to us that our living arrangements were not working out, as I lived at my parent's but spent most of my time at Matt's house, so in early 2009 we moved into our first apartment together. After a few months of this, I was getting antsy for us to get engaged. Right around May of 2009, I went to Kaua'i (the Garden isle of Hawaii) with my family for 2 weeks. Matt decided that he hated being without me so badly that we needed to get married ASAP. He told his niece Kaelyn that when I came home, he was going to ask me to marry him. Subsequently, he told the rest of his family, who were supposed to keep this information from me. That ended up being unnecessary, as I cracked the code to his user name on my computer when I suspected he was keeping something from me. I scrolled through his browser history until I found pages from diamond websites and was happy to discover he had good taste in jewelry! We got engaged September of 2009, just a little over a year of dating. Some may say we moved too fast, but in my opinion life is too short to not spend it with someone you love.

Photobucket

At first, I was going to do a big wedding with both of our families in attendance and wear a big poufy dress with big poufy hair. Wedding planning gave me such anxiety that we decided to scrap the whole plan and just fly to Hawaii together, just the two of us, to get married on the beach. I still got to have the experience of wedding dress shopping with my mom, just not the headache of having to entertain dozens of people for a whole day. Matt and I are both happy that we didn't cave to the pressure of having the wedding other people wanted for us; we got to have our dream wedding in a truly magical place with zero pressure. Kaua'i kind of forces you to slow down, literally and figuratively, and we spent a lot of time eating, going to the north shore to hang out with all the hippies and eat fish tacos, shopping for wedding sandals and driving around with the top down on our rental car. We got married on August 6th, 2010 and it was hands down the best day of my life and will be forever.

Photobucket

Matt and I have very strong personalities and neither of us back down from an argument. Over the past 2 years we have learned a lot about ourselves and what we are capable of. We also learned that marriage does change the way you look at things and the fundamentals of your relationship. That is why we both feel it is such a shame that not everyone gets to experience this sometimes hellish ride! But it is also a lot of fun! In 2011, Matt and I are now in the same graduate school program, studying to become professional counselors. He would like to work with clients who have acute mental illness, while I would like to work with drug and alcohol clients or LGBT clients or do grief counseling.

Photobucket

Eventually we plan to open our own counseling practice. We just bought our first house and we plan to start a family when we are both done with school. We live with our two cats Puss Puss and Sookie Lee Grammer.

As a LGB person (or straight), if you have anything you would like to say regarding ANYTHING to do with gay rights then please do either comment on here or email whatwegandidnext@gmail.com

Feel free to ask any questions about what you are thinking of submitting. Look forward to getting together on this!
