Real Life Lesbians: Interview with actress & model Alexi Melvin

Yes, we have another lovely Real Life Lesbian to showcase and this time it is actress/model/writer Alexi Melvin. She's a lovely girl who is out and proud and on the rise! So take it away Lexi...

1.            Tell us a bit about yourself:

I am a 23-year-old actress, writer, and lover of animals living in New York City! I grew up mainly in Scottsdale, Arizona, but I was always traveling. My dad was a Major League Baseball player, and is now the manager of the Oakland A’s. I still absolutely love to travel. It is one of my main passions in life. I was diagnosed with Juvenile Diabetes at the age of 14, and I am extremely active in raising money and awareness for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. I would say that my one goal in life is to inspire others. I have a cat named Cleo and a puppy named Bean who are the loves of my life.

2.            So what does 2012 have in store for you? Exciting times ahead no doubt!

A lot of auditioning, traveling, and exploring! I am really trying to put myself out there as far as my creative aspirations go. I am hoping to be auditioning a lot, and I am also working on writing a screenplay and a novel. As I mentioned before, I also recently got a puppy named Bean, so I will be certainly spending a great deal of time with her!!

SO CUTE!!!

3.            When did you come out and how did your friends and family react?

I came out when I was about 18. My close friends and family were not surprised, because I had definitely confided in a lot of my friends and family about my feelings towards women as it progressed. The people I really care about were happy for me, and didn’t look at me any differently at all. Of course, I had a few family members that still choose not to speak of it, but that’s their decision. I am completely happy with who I am.

4.            Do you feel that it is important to be out and proud as a lesbian?

Yes. Everyone should be proud of who they are. I think that all gay people should be viewed and treated exactly the same as everyone else. Gay men and gay women both should completely accept themselves for who they are, and good things will follow. If someone is 100% comfortable in their own skin, other people (with half a brain) have no choice but to accept them as well.

5.            Do you think that there is a lack of lesbian role models? If so, Why?

There could always be more role models in the world that own their sexuality, as well as all other aspects of who they are. Our world needs more good examples for young, impressionable women (and men) to look up to. Especially these days!

6.            With the likes of Chely Wright and Amber Heard coming out, do you think more female celebrities are likely to come out of the closet?

I think we are definitely headed in the right direction. More and more women are starting to speak out, and it can only go up from here!

7.            Do you have any advice to those struggling with their sexual orientation or fearful of coming out?

It is so important to love and accept yourself first, before even starting to consider whether or not others do. The world can be beautiful, or the world can be frightening and cruel. It really depends on how we choose to view it. The same goes with how we choose to view ourselves. Love yourself the way you would want to be loved by someone else.
