Long Distance Loving: The Good, The Bad, The Ugly

As we come to an end to our LONG stretch of LONG distance, we thought we would round up the good, the bad and the ugly of doing long distance.

Most people warn you off doing long distance, "it will never last" they say. Well we're here to tell you, yes, yes it will! Want to know why? Because we love each other enough to put in the effort to make it worth. Want to know why others don't last? Because they don't do that. Whitney & I have always had the most strongest and deepest love for one another and share a bond unlike most couples that we meet. Despite the distance and cultural differences we MADE it work. It didn't just work out by chance. But lets run through the good, the bad and the ugly.

The Good

  • You get to visit new and different places! Whether you're different ends of a country or countries apart, you're guaranteed to learn more and develop as a person by traveling and being apart of different places.

  • You get to miss one another!! The feeling of knowing you'll be seeing each other again is like no other. The butterflies and excitement still continues 4 years later!

  • If you're a trans-atlantic like us, you get to travel and see the world, experience new cultures and learn new things you wouldn't ordinarily do.

  • Your love grows stronger, you learn the important rules of communicating and making sure each other feels loved regardless of what is happening in your life.

The Bad

  • Whilst traveling has it's perks, having to do it so much over year becomes a chore when you have to go through the same routine of checking in, security and customs, changing flights, waiting around in airports etc etc. It soon becomes routine rather than novel and new.

  • Missing one another like hell and there is nothing that you can do about it. Nothing that a phone call, e-mail, text, picture or Skype comes close to when you just need a kiss and a cuddle.

  • Missing out on the little things that every couple gets to do, whether it be movie dates to the small thing of grocery shopping or buying a new outfit and wanting to show off. What's the point in getting my hair done if she can't see it?!

  • The money, ooh is it expensive to make a long distance relationship work!!

  • The clash of cultures and lack of understanding, where a simple misunderstanding of how one family operates to how different a word is pronounced can seem so confusing.

The Ugly
  • The fights. Ooh we've had some big and bad ones that's for sure. The distance only makes them worse and prolonged when a hug would have solved the situation long before.

  • Visa and immigration. Ooh lordy is this the UGLY side to LDR. As if the miles and time apart weren't enough to deal with, you also have immigration governing how long you can stay in each others company. Not only this, applying to move to another country is a BIG and daunting project. You might think it's obvious you two should be together but then this all comes down to an Entry Clearance Officer who decides you fate. May 2011 we were very unlucky, June 2012 we were very lucky!!

  • Whilst we're on this topic, this leads nicely to gay marriage and the law! Having a long distance relationship with an American makes it just that extra bit harder when you're gay due to the lack of immigration rights to same-sex couples. Not only are there ONLY 8 states in America that allow gay marriage, only one of them allows out of state marriage and NONE of them apply to immigration. Therefore the only other way that it would ever be possible for us to live in America with the way things are would be if I were to somehow get sponsorship from a company who would have to prove that there is NO-ONE else on the USA that they could hire for the job. It would also take at least half a year and lots of money, all the while I would not be allowed to visit USA! So all in all, THANK YOU BRITAIN for having civil partnerships in place. Whilst we may be getting gay marriage in a few years to come, I'm just glad that we have a system that recognises and legitimises same sex relationships.

Starting out we had NO clue what lay ahead or the twists and turns that it would take. We didn't realise how HARD it was going to be and how LONG it would take to live our lives together like we were meant to do all a long. Despite the difficulties to long distance, we would never go back and change a thing. It's lead us to this very point of where we're meant to be. Waking up together and going to sleep together, and finally truly experiencing all the boring parts to a relationship from grocery shopping to putting the bins out.

Hello LIFE and LOVE!

TOMORROW!!!

Have we changed your mind about long distance relationships?

Are you in a LDR? Anything to add- good, bad or ugly?

WHITNEY GOT HER VISA!!!

Yes, really!!!!

WHITNEY HAS GOT HER VISA!!!!

It deserve caps lock indeedy!!

SooooOOoOoO excited/ happy/ relieved/ shocked... and a crazy amount of emotions!

We found out sooner than we thought we would! We received confirmation that they had received all our evidencee in NY on Friday, and that we'd next be emailed to tell usan Entry Clearence Officer was looing at our case.

Next thing I knew, I was at work and Whitney starts ringing me. I always said that when that happens that its only ONE thing it can be about!! Well I was on the phone at work so I could do nothing but watch her call and wonder what it's about. "Surely we can't have heard yet? OMG is it bad news? Is she just calling to say an officer is looking at it?! Surely not?!" I had to leave my office anyways to pop downstairs so I took my phone with me and rang with baited breath... "Boo boo?!!" I anxiously asked to which she replied... "I GOT IT!!! I got my visa!!!' to which I was dumbfounded and made sure she had read the email right!! Also may have done some screaming/ squealing and jumping up and down.

I then went back to my office and announced Whitney had got her visa (ahh still so surreal to type!) and unfortunately had to go into database training straight away. I felt like I was going to explode, I was so shaky and my heart bating and just wanted to run around telling everyone haha. By the time I came back from training my phone was inundated as Whitney had updated twitter with the GREAT news!!

We have also already booked her ticket for THIS MONDAY!!!!!! Yes that's right, a mere 6 days separate us from FINALLY living our life, day in day out, no more nights apart! & of course, soon to be wife & wife ;)

Here is a video I made leading up to the Visa plus us on the phone booking the ticket and discussing receiving the news ahh!!

Thank you ALL so much for your over whelming love and support and sharing in the excitement.

GOOD BYE LONG DISTANCE!!!!!

Lets raise a glass and toast to that?! Cheers!!

See you SOON baby!!! I love you!!!

Update on the Visa, Paris Video + Gay Rights Roundup

As promised from the long title...

Update on the Visa

It has officially been sent to NY to be processed. Yes we officially applied last week, but you also have to get biometrics done (finger prints and photos) and then send that with the application printed off and all the evidence. So Whitney travelled two hours to Charleston yesterday for a 10 minute appointment (for the third time!) but of course is worth it. It means that it is now on it's way to NY with 'PRIORITY' marked on it. Not because we're Wegan ;) but because we paid $300 for it to be processed quicker. We will of course keep you updated and predict we'll know the result by the end of next week!

Paris Video- Valentines Day!

I finally edited our videos from our Paris trip in February when we went for Valentines day <3 Also stumbled across a French song from 1986 about two femmes in love. How perfect?!

Gay Rights Roundup

Well it's not really a 'round up' as such, however if you live in the UK you'll know that there are BIG talks about gay marriage at the moment. The Church of England have submitted their response to the consultation. They believe it will undermine their position and ultimately threat it may impact on them conducting marriages at all. Oh get a grip and get with the times.

Gay marriage will "alter the intrinsic nature of marriage as the union of a man and a woman, as enshrined in human institutions throughout history".

They say that marriage "an underlying biological complementarity which, for many, includes the possibility of procreation". I'm sorry- are you going to go find all those married that a) haven't had children b) don't plan on having children & c) those who physically cannot have children and rid them of being married?! Because that's right, people can get divorced AND get re-married in the Church of England (since 2002).

You can't pick and choose how you modernise your beliefs. You either stay in the dark ages completely or you move forward or you fail to exist.

On the same day that this came out, Stonewall launched their report which found 70% of Britains agree with gay marriage, as well as three in five who are religious in favour of gay marriage. So there we go. Case closed.

Now we got to start planning this Wegging* now don't we?!

*wedding. Duh.

Whitney's Visa!!!

It's official-

We have finally applied for Whitney's visa to the UK!!!!

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!

We are of course SOOOO excited but at the same time very scared haha. We just hope that this time our visa application is a SUCCESS!

We don't want a replay of this....

It has evidently been over a year since the last visa was denied and we've been trying to get everything in place for our next application. But with a solicitor, jobs, money and a house we hope we have a good chance to succeed.

We shall most probably hear the verdict in about two weeks, so eek a nerve wracking wait but will be the best news EVER!!!!

Keep EVERYTHING crossed for us y'all!!

Positive thoughts- Wegan will soon be reunited FOREVER!!!

No more goodbyes!!!!!!

Long Distance Loving: The Traveling (& Money!)

Long Distance Loving

Traveling (& Money!)

When embarking on a long distance relationship your main thought is, obviously, the DISTANCE! But you know what comes with this? An EXPENSIVE relationship! haha. If money was no issue, long distance relationships would be faaaaar more easier. Being that we live in popular destinations of England and Hawaii- there is never such thing as a cheap ticket. Regardless we have managed to travel many, many miles to see one another. Whether it be for 12 days, 3 weeks or 3 months. In total I have been to Hawaii 5 times and to South Carolina 4 times. Whitney has been to the UK 6 times. That's a lot of miles, money, plane journeys, packed luggages and airport hellos and goodbyes!

Wegan- Hawaii 2009- look how young!!

I embarked on the first long distance traveling to Hawaii in March 2009. Not only was this my first plane journey traveling all by myself... it's a 21 hour long journey! Scary stuff. Still I managed to successfully get myself to L.A (11 hours) and then onto Honolulu (6 hours). I have always flown with American Airlines, they always have the best prices, their airline staff are aways the nicest.. just don't talk to me about the pizza. If  have to smell it... vom. Luckily as a vegetarian (If I remember to book it) I can get some nice alternative meals haha. My favourite part to flying is the movies!! I have fond memories of trying not to cry too much to 'Marley & Me' & 'Water for Elephants'. The journey there of course is always the most exciting, for both of us. From the packing, to waking up early like it is Christmas, getting yourself to the airport, the check in, security check, waiting in the departure lounge... It's no mean an easy feat but exciting nonetheless. (The other one has a slightly easier day of butterflies and pampering to be done). We message throughout the journey and say goodbye to our last UK & USA messages. I always arrive to a 'Welcome to America!!!' text when I land :)

Essential to traveling- neck pillow, book, makeup and camera.

The biggest pain for me when traveling is the connecting flight where on the way you have to go collect your luggage, make sure it's re-checked for your next flight and go through customs and security AGAIN! The worst wait used to be the last couple of hours before boarding the flight from L.A to Hawaii. However once I was on it, I could (try to) fall asleep knowing I'd be arriving to my girls arms and a lei in a matter of a few hours.

Oh dear- looking rough after 21 hours journey!
I've most certainly met some interesting people on the way. One of my funniest memories is boarding a plane from L.A to Honolulu and being sat amongst all the military. The girl next to me proceeded to show me all her photos of her in uniform, in the desert, and then her in makeup and in a dress. She also read me a love letter given to her... and what chapter she was up to in her 6 books. Regardless of how many times I tried to make it apparent I wanted to sleep, there was no stopping her haha. One of the highlights from traveling was being upgraded free to business class on my last flight from America to London as a result of double booking- Thank you American Airlines!

Arriving in my final desitation is of course always the most exciting part. As soon as my phone is turned back on I normally get a message from Whitney telling me to hurry up before I'm even off the plane haha. I used to love the first smell of fresh Hawaiian air as I made my way from departure lounge to the luggage claim.

The first time arriving was also the funniest. In London Heathrow people waiting are not allowed in the baggage claim, they have to wait for those arriving in the arrivals area. Little did I know that Whitney would be waiting for me at the baggage claim in Honolulu airport!! I had decided I would pop to the toilet once getting to baggage claim to freshen up after a 21 hour journey.. as I walked down the steps oblivious I heard my name being called and wondered who on earth would know my name... then I spotted Whitney coming towards me laughing with a lei as I stood there VERY confused!! haha. Needless to say I was well prepared next time. It became a ritual to grab a taco bell after wards and to then have immediate cuddles in the bed (after of course a cuddle and kiss in the car, or a sneaky kiss in the lift that we do when Whitney arrives in London).

People often thought we were insane traveling to see one another so much. I often have to deal with jetlagg at work. But what can I say- it's worth it. She's worth it. And I wouldn't have it any other way. To be apart for months and to then be reunited is literally the best feeling in the world.

But lets talk about the worst feeling in the world that comes from long distance and traveling... the dreaded goodbye!! Whitney remembers our first goodbye as the worse. We had spent our first time together in the paradise that is Hawaii and we were together for 24/7 to suddenly having to say goodbye not knowing exactly when we'd see each other again. Whitney got back in the car after seeing me off to finding my water bottle in the car just as I left. She immediately started crying, and she found it very hard to go back to life in Hawaii where everything had now been touched by us. This is a feeling we both experience, it's often worse for the one left behind. As the one leaving is trying to get through the journey to get home and be reunited with family and friend the other end, the other has to return to a bed where they last lay, a cup they had left, towels they had last used, and an empty place at the dining table or besides them in the car. It is literally heart breaking and we often wish we could be knocked out for the day of saying goodbye. For the days leading up to the departure Whitney used to cry for many nights at the thought of it whilst I tried to hold it together for the both of us. This often meant me crying at the airport and afterwards lol. We also try to write each other letters to read once we have departed which will be so surreal to read back one day after we have been together without a goodbye for so long. And what can I say- I gladly look forward to that day!

This is of course my experience of traveling and I'm sure Whitney has many stories to tell from her equally many trips to the UK. What is clear is that regardless of the amount of money it costed, or the miles between us, we ALWAYS made it happen. Even when it seemed like it couldn't, we always did. We may look like we have a lot of money to spend but believe you me- both being students and working part-time, we did not! We literally spent ALL our money traveling to see one another. To put it at a rough figure we'd estimate a total of $25,000 spent on plane tickets!! WOAH! (You're welcome American Airlines!) and I have traveled a total of 41, 691 miles (according to AA!). Traveling has of course changed me for the better and I've got the experience the most amazing times with my girl in Hawaii. However, I cannot wait for us to travel many hours together, instead of apart.

Here's to no more airport goodbyes and one more final airport hello!!
