Wegan Travels USA: San Diego Guide

SAN DIEGO: SLEEP, EAT, DO

Next stop on our USA road trip took us to San Diego, a place we had both been keen to visit for a while and it did not disappoint!

WHERE TO SLEEP:

The Sofia Hotel:

Located in downtown San Diego, is the charming and sophisticated The Sofia Hotel. We stayed in a wonderful suite, which meant we had lots of space for all of our luggage out of our  hotel bedroom! The room also came equipped with a coffee machine and mini fridge and it was one of the comfiest beds from our three month adventure. It is situated with loads of shops and restaurants within walking distance and about 15- 30 minutes car drive or so from the beaches.
Visit The Sofia Hotel.

WHERE TO EAT:

Westbean Cafe:

The below sign definitely lured us in with it's intriguing lavender flavour & praise at making a wise decision! We were not disappointed that we decided to head in to the cafe located down town, and enjoyed an iced lavender latte (with coconut milk).

Visit Westbean Cafe.

Board & Brew:

If you're looking for a tasty sandwich then look no further than Board & Brew. We went to the one located by Pacific Beach. I had the Vegi Supreme and it's not often I have a vegetarian sandwich that is actually tasty and I'm still craving it! Whitney opted for a turkey sandwhich on french bread. Board & Brew are known for their quality sandwhich's and craft beer. We're digging it! (Thank's to our friend Taylor for her recommendation).

Visit Board & Brew.

Duke's at La Jolla:

We were very excited to get a taste of Aloha at Hawaiian restaurant Duke's, which is fairly new to the La Jolla area. We frequent Duke's in Hawaii so it was great to experience the aloha vibe while overlooking La Jolla Cove. Whitney enjoyed a seared ahi bowl and I wasn't fancying their veggie main of a red curry, so I had a salad with fries (I love fries though...)

Visit Duke's.

Cafe Coyote:

If you're looking for Mexican, then you've come to the right place. There is no shortage of Mexican restaurants in Old Town, San Diego (which is considered the 'birthplace' of California). We got to dine at Cafe Coyote, which had a massive line, so we knew we were at the right place! I enjoyed potato's in a burrito and quite frankly, that's like a dream come true for a potato lover like me! We of course had to sample their delicious margarita's and managed to somehow squeeze in dessert. Whitney's fav is flan.

Visit Cafe Coyote.

WHAT TO DO:

On our walk around Sand Diego down town (actually just round the corner from our hotel) we came across The Spreckels Theatre which clearly has awesome acts there. We got very excited that Ru Paul's drag race stars and Jason Mraz were going to be appearing their soon!

Beaches:

Sand Diego has a plethora of beaches, so many that it was hard for us to decide where we should venture to in our short stay there. We headed to Mission Beach (which has an amusement park with a wooden rollercoaster) and walked along it all the way to Pacific Beach (about 2 miles). Along the boardwalk you'll find various bars and casual cafes / restaurants. It was fun to see but it didn't feel like our vibe (perhaps because it was cloudy, the sun can change everything!) Unfortunately we ran out of time to visit Coronado, which we got highly recommend by many people, so next time we're heading straight there!

La Jolla:

Exploring La Jolla was our favourite day in San Diego and it is such a beautiful area with a great vibe. We enjoyed meeting lots of sea lions at La Jolla Cove. They are so, so cute! (Warning: there is a big smell of fish! Ha).

Downtown San Diego:

If you're looking to do some shopping then head to the mall in down town San Diego. You can even go into Victoria Secrets and if you're lucky, the woman behind the counter may ask you & your wife if you are mother and daughter!... Yes that happened, and she thought Megan was the mom. Whitney will never let that go. To make yourself feel better, you can go pose by this lovely marble wall.

Hillcrest LGBT Brewery:

We met up with brewer Shaver at LGBT brewery, Hill Crest. We had a wonderful time chatting and sampling their delicious beers.

Visit Hillcrest Brewing Company

Drag Show:

We had a drag show booked at gay bar Urban Mo's and we had NO idea how amazing it would be! You may know that we're big fans of Ru Pauls Drag Race... & the show had drag race stars including Chad Michaels.

Visit Urban Mo's.

There was still so much left to do in San Diego, including lots of free things to do. You can definitely spend a few days here.

Goodbye San Diego! You were great & we'll see you again for sure!

This Greetings Tour sign is located by the Belching Beaver Brewery, 4225 30th St, San Diego, CA 92104. (Thanks to our blogger friends Allie & Sam who we saw stopped by here!)
