Wegan Travels Alberta, Canada: A Guide To The Mountains (Jasper)

Travel Guide to Jasper, Alberta, Canada

We had the most adventurous and cozy couple of days in the beautiful town of Jasper in Alberta. We stayed at the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge nestled in a cabin overlooking the frozen lake. We were also there for Valentine's Day, which made it all the more romantic and memorable!

This trip is in partnership with Travel Alberta, and we were lucky to have a wonderful guide / driver/ amazing guy called Daniel with us.

Where To Stay:

Pretty much all of our winter dreams became a reality when we pulled up to the beautiful resort of Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge and known to the locals as the 'JPL'.

Psst. It's rumoured that Prince Harry & Meghan spent their honeymoon here!... Plus it's also a favourite of the Queen's... and we can see why!

Our bedroom was inside a cabin, just by the frozen lake. Can it get anymore romantic?!

What To Do:

Skiing at Marmot Basin:

This was now our second time skiing ever in a week and we had such an amazing experience in our skis and admiring the stunning scenery all around at Marmot Basin. Marmot Basin has a quiet and chilled feel to the resort.

Group photo with our lovely instructor!

I mean... if we don't rock the skiing look then I don't know who does...

We graduated from the bunny slopes after we learned the basics like stopping confidently with a good snow plow and being able to control your direction. All very important when skiing, right? Off we go on the ski lift up to the mountain.

With our coordination, I'm shocked we managed to get off the slope so gracefully!

The joy that we made it off in time and we're going back round again, haha!

Such a beautiful view!

Look at the snow plows!

As it was Valentine's Day, a romantic gesture was called for. Moments after this photo was taken, Megan went soaring down the mountain and wasn't able to stop, she was headed for tree's and the chair lift pole! Seeing my wife in distress, I (Whitney) take off down the mountain after her but also can't stop, whoops! We end up throwing ourselves over to stop. & probably giving our instructor and guide bit of a heart attack. OOPS!

Spot the woodpecker!

There's snowbody like you!

Ice Canyon Walking:

After experiencing such a natural high skiing, the fun and adventure wasn't over yet. Next stop was Ice Canyon Walking with Sun Dog Tours with our helmets and icers on our feet, we felt so prepared. (Plus Daniel was with us too).

It was also so amazing to see these canyons frozen as in the summer it's a totally different experience with the water flowing. It was crazy to think we were walking in what is normally full of water after winter ends!

The scenery was breathtaking!

We spotted a hiker doing some casual ice climbing.

How amazing are frozen waterfalls?

We're about to walk over that ice. Yup. We got this!

Our ice canyon guide Wes was a pro!

One of our favourite views on the walk...

Where To Eat:

For breakfast, we were lucky enough to eat at one of the restaurants within the JPL, Orso Trattoria two days in a row and it was delicious. Their maple porridge and Eggs Benedict were so tasty.

We enjoyed a lovely dinner at Evil Dave's Grill, where they were serving up some pretty tasty local eats. They have a menu that definitely caters to all palettes, including vegetarians and pescetarians like us! Whitney even had her first Caesar here, which is Canada's take on a Bloody Mary where they use clamato juice which adds a bit of extra flavour.  This particular one was called the 'Evil Caesar' and it was fantastic.

We started with their 'Beautiful Brie' which is a full wheel of almond and panko crusted, deep fried brie, chilled pear puree, balsamic reduction, croustini- it was DIVINE!

In addition, we had their spicy bruscetta with chilli flakes, lime juice and cilantro. It was so flavourful and fresh. Perfect vegetarian starters that don't lack flavour.

Megan had the 'Karma Curry' which was also vegan and gluten free.

Whitney had the vegetarian 'Typhoon Noodles'

Valentines Day:

After a full day of skiing and ice canyon walking, it was now time for some of our favourite champagne, Moet and a cozy romantic evening together including dinner at the JPL's, The Emerald Lounge.

Whitney ended up surprising Megan with balloons and a few surprises all laid out decoratively on the bed.

That's one way to ensure you champagne is nice and chilled!

She even personalised the balloons with our initials,  W&M!

We carried on the lovely evening with some food and drink nestled by the fireplace.

At the end of dinner, we were given two long stemmed roses, which we found to be such a nice touch to end a perfect evening and our stay at the Fairmont JPL.

Upon leaving the JPL we came across these gorgeous animals!... Ah, Canada!
